Liocalyon (Liostro x Calypso II)

April 2, 1992 – February 26, 2019

Holsteiner Stamm 741

Liocalyon comes from the strong performance Stamm 741. This Stamm is also known for the top producer Cardento (by Capitol I). Cardento has proven himself at the highest level, winning a silver medal at the World and European Championships and the Athen Olympics with rider Peter Eriksson.

Liocalyon’s bloodline combines solid foundation blood (Liostro and Calypso II) with Thoroughbred (Sacramento Song xx and Little Lion xx), and he went on to jump at the 1.50m level with USA’s Mandy Porter.

In Germany, Liocalyon’s sire Liostro (by Ladykiller xx) has produced 4 advanced level dressage horses and 17 offspring that have jumped 1.40m and higher, including his Holsteiner-approved son Levantos II (1.45m) and his son Vilamoura Picasso 296 (1.50m).

Liocalyon’s grandmother, Maehrte (by Sacramento Song xx), produced the 1.40m jumping horse Fairman (by Fernando) and his great-grandmother Holdine (by Little Lion xx) produced the 1.40m jumping horse Lagunas (by Lexington).

The most known offspring by Liocalyon is Delphi out of the Thoroughbred mother Flower Power xx (by Brilliant Invader xx out of Brief Glance xx by Decies xx). Delphi jumped at 1.60m level with Katie McVean; they placed 6th in the World Cup Final in Leipzig in 2011. Flower Power xx also jumped at the 1.60m level with Jeff McVean.

Also from the Holdine branch comes the international dressage horse Carino (by Caretino) and the 1.60m jumping horse Caruso (by Casco).

Big, bold, beautiful and fast, Liocalyon loves the winner’s circle. In 2005 alone, he consistently placed in the top three in the 1.45m division at the Spruce Meadows, All Canada, and North American tournaments. And in the High Junior Jumpers, he placed in the top 4 of his class. From advanced flatwork to jump-off and speed classes, Lio enjoys life and loves a challenge.

Lio retired in 2006 after an amazing ten years of competition, however, his mark can still be seen in show jumping competition through his many talented offspring. He is licensed with the American Holsteiner Horse Association (AHHA) and the Oldenburg Gov.

Son of Liostro, Grandson of Ladykiller XX

Liostro is the last approved son of Ladykiller and the leading producer of money winners in the US in 2002. Lio shares lineage with Sapphire (grandson of Ladykiller), Mark Watring’s Pan American Games Gold Medal Horse. Ladykiller, incorporated into the German breeding system, is by far the most successful progenitor, passing on his type, head, correct foundation and jumping ability.

Calypso II’s Progeny

On Lio’s dam’s side, Calypso II’s progeny show great jumping form and rideability. His sons include: Contendor, Montender (Marco Kutscher), Coriolan, Colani, Chassur I and II. Grandsire Cor de la Bryère, with his incredible bascule and great jumping ability, is credited with improving the Holsteiner jumping style. “Corde” passes along strong nerves, intelligence and willingness to perform.

Outstanding Offspring

Lio’s progeny are making big impressions: Approved elite BWP stallion, Peterbilt (Liocalyon x Jeribos), successfully showed at the grand prix level with rider Guy Thomas. In 2010, Peterbilt was virtually unstoppable, winning the $150,000 Northern California Triple Crown of Show Jumping in June, in addition to his other wins and top grand prix placings.

The 2001 bay mare Dunstan Delphi (Liocalyon x Dunstan Flower Power) made a name for herself around the world with New Zealand rider Katie McVean. The duo placed sixth in the 2011 World Cup Final in Leipzig, Germany. Delphi has since been sold and continues to compete at the CSI5* level with Saudi Arabia’s Kamal Abdullah Bahamdan.

Lio’s offspring consistently inherit his good work ethic, wonderful gaits and willing temperament.
